Caribbean-Asian Fusion Cafe opens in downtown Birmingham

Fans of the former Miami Cafe in Pelham should be thrilled to know that, after a couple of years out of the restaurant business, chef and owner Luis Delgado has opened a new version of the restaurant, this one called Miami Fusion Cafe, in downtown Birmingham.

The "fusion" in the restaurant's name is best exemplified by a Caribbean-Asian mash-up that Delgado calls CariMaki, which is a sushi roll with Caribbean ingredients such as black beans, roasted pork and plantains.

Among the favorites on the menu are the Cuban sandwich, with slow-roasted pork, sweet ham, baby Swiss cheese and pickles on crusty bread; empanadas with beef or chicken; Caribbean jerk chicken with mango salsa; and mofongo, a Puerto Rican dish with fried and mashed green plantains served with pork, chicken, shrimp or steak.
