Lucy Buffett is a product of Alabama’s Gulf Coast and she comes by her love of the area’s cuisine quite naturally. She grew up in Mobile believing—as her new cookbook puts it—in ”the power of gumbo.” Some of her brother Jimmy’s biggest musical hits have to do with food and drink (Cheeseburgers in Paradise, Margaritaville) and her mother taught her to eat dessert before the rest of the meal, presumably to save the best for first.
Some of that and more carry over to the LuLu’s restaurants she owns in Gulf Shores and in Destin, FL, as well as to her new cookbook, GUMBO LOVE: Recipes for Gulf Coast Cooking, Entertaining and Savoring the Good Life. It begins with desserts and includes some distinctive takes on burgers and cocktails and much more Gulf Coast-inspired fare. It is also generously sprinkled with stories and wisdom provided by Lucy’s life experiences.
She shares two of the featured recipes in the book with Á la Carte Alabama.
