The truth is that there was never really a “Mama” behind Mama’s Sack Lunches. But Bertha Harris understands why people think it’s her.
Harris peeked out of the kitchen this week to greet customers and fix homemade soup, sandwiches and fruit for the downtown lunch crowd just like she has for decades. She’s been there off and on since the 21 S. Perry St. diner opened just off Dexter Avenue nearly 30 years ago, selling brown bags full of the kinds of food “mama” might pack for school kids. It has changed owners four times in those years, but she’s been a constant.
